about this event

We are volunteers coming together to make LA better for everyone!

We are a group of designers, developers, product managers, and non-technical community activists. We're both experts and learners, so you can flex your skills or learn new ones while giving back at the same time!

**ATTENTION:** HackforLA has temporarily paused the issuance of volunteer offer letters for OPT. Please fill out this OPT Interest List form, so that we can notify you once we start again.

HackforLA will continue to support documentation for other volunteer activities needed for school/college/university courses. These are generally provided near the end of course. These are provided on a case by case basis. Not all uses will be appropriate for Hack for LA, please confirm with us, before during this session if your school/activity is eligible.

FAQ: Q: I don't live in Los Angeles, can I still volunteer? A: Hack for LA is a global organization with volunteers from all over the world. However, a prerequisite for joining our onboarding, is that you have reviewed any civic tech volunteering opportunities in your own community before joining Hack for LA. Q: This meetup seems quite long, can I do it in two sessions? A: Yes, and during the meetup we will tell you how you can come back for part 2, if your schedule requires, or you just want to think about being a member after you have completed part 1. Q: I heard this meeting was longer than 1.5 hours, is that true? A: Depends; It can be as short as 1.5 hours and as long as 3. Q: Does membership cost money? A: No, we don't charge any membership fees or ask our members for money. Q: Will I get matched with a project? A: Depends; some roles get matched during this meetup and some roles have to do self placement based on openings on teams. Q: I heard you switched to a webinar model from an in person zoom meeting. A: Yes, however, it's still very interactive. We use the first 40 minutes and several (secret) techniques to weed out the potential bombers. Q: I will be late, is that ok? A: If you are more than 10 min late, our automation won't continue your onboarding until you repeat that portion (on a future onboarding session). Q: I got kicked out of the session, now what? A: If you got kicked out for cause, then attend next week. If you just got logged off, log back in. Q: What is Hack for LA's GitHub? A: github.com/hackforla
