about this event

Build technology that serves your community. Build for Good is a one-day hackathon at UC Berkeley, co-hosted by Maximizing Potential, a student-run nonprofit founded at West Valley College, as well as Code for Good, which is a technology for good nonprofit at UC Berkeley. Build for Good brings students from universities all around together to do exactly that. In one day, you'll join a team, build a working prototype, and demo it to the room.

Prizes: $1,000 in prizes, sponsored by Maximizing Potential: 1st place $500, 2nd place $300, 3rd place $200.

Tracks: Each team picks one track to build for. Food Access & Local Food Systems: help people find public food resources or navigate produce programs and how to take part in them. Homelessness Support: make public information about meals, hygiene services, and support resources easier to find and understand. Youth Well-Being & Violence Prevention: create an accessible guide to publicly available youth programs and community resources.

Who should come? Everyone is welcome: students from any community college or university, at any skill level. You don't need a team, an idea, or a coding background. Register individually or form teams in the morning. Bring a laptop, an open mind, and a willingness to collaborate.

Schedule: 9:00 – 10:15 AM check-in and team matching; 10:15 – 10:45 AM opening and track introductions; 10:45 – 11:45 AM panel; 11:45 AM – 2:15 PM build; 2:15 – 3:30 PM judging; 3:30 – 4:05 PM winners announced; 4:05 – 4:35 PM ceremony; 4:35 – 5:00 PM afterparty.
